A Call to Action: Addressing the Tragedy at Apalachee High. Standing with the Families and Students

Press Statement from the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM)

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) is heartbroken by the tragic school shooting that occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. This senseless act of violence, which claimed the lives of two students and two teachers, and injured several others, has shaken our community to its core. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to everyone affected by this horrific event.

This tragedy, involving a 14-year-old student, serves as yet another reminder of the urgent need for systemic change to address gun violence in our schools and communities. The use of an AR-15-style weapon in this attack underscores the importance of advocating for stricter gun control measures and ensuring that firearms do not fall into the wrong hands, especially those of minors. The fact that this young individual had been flagged by law enforcement more than a year ago for threats related to school shootings makes it painfully clear that more needs to be done to prevent such devastating incidents.

The AADM is committed to fostering safer, more inclusive spaces for our youth and will continue to advocate for policies that promote peace and safety for all. However, we cannot do this alone. As a community, we must come together and take proactive steps to prevent future tragedies like this one. We call upon local leaders, law enforcement, school officials, and families to work together to ensure that our schools remain places of learning and growth, free from the fear of violence.

What We Can Do as a Community:

1. Advocate for Stronger Gun Laws: We urge citizens to contact their local and state representatives to demand stricter gun control laws, including background checks, safe storage laws, and raising the legal age for firearm possession.

2. Support Mental Health Resources: We must prioritize access to mental health resources in schools and our community, ensuring that students have the support they need before tragedies occur.

3. Promote Anti-Violence Education: AADM encourages schools to implement anti-violence and anti-bullying programs to help students understand the impact of their actions and promote conflict resolution skills.

4. Enhance School Security and Reporting Systems: Schools must enhance their security measures and reporting systems for threats, ensuring that every report is thoroughly investigated, and that students feel comfortable coming forward with concerns.

5. Community Vigilance and Support: We encourage parents, teachers, and students to remain vigilant and support one another. Community members should work together to create an environment where students feel safe to express their emotions and struggles.

6. Donate: “The GoFundMe community is coming together to support those affected. Donate to verified fundraisers today to help the people and families affected.” https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/georgia-high-school-shooting-relief

Our hearts are with Winder, and we stand in solidarity with the families of the victims and survivors. Together, we can take action to protect our children and ensure that tragedies like this never happen again.
