Reflections and Insights from a DUI Arrest: A Journey Toward Accountability and Advocacy
On October 1, 2021, I made a series of decisions that culminated in my arrest on six misdemeanor charges, including two counts of Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Failure to Maintain Lane, Disregarding a Traffic Control Device, Improper Passing on the Right, and Improper Headlights. This experience, while deeply challenging, has become a turning point in my life, providing opportunities for reflection, accountability, and growth.
The Arrest: A Series of Poor Choices
The evening began as a night of celebration and learning. I attended a concert at the James Brown Arena in Augusta, Georgia, with friends, eager to enjoy the music and explore the special effects and lighting techniques used in the production. My curiosity led me to separate from my group to learn more about the technical aspects of the event. Over 4.4 hours, I consumed 2-3 large beers, equivalent to approximately 4.8 standard drinks.
Upon leaving the venue, I found myself alone, disoriented, and in urgent need of a restroom. My mental and physical impairments, coupled with a strong sense of panic, led me to make a critical error: I attempted to locate and drive to the nearest public restroom in an unfamiliar and poorly lit area. My impaired state resulted in multiple traffic violations, which ultimately led to my arrest by a local officer.
As a queer Black man, my anxiety during the arrest was heightened by fears of racial discrimination and potential harm. These fears were compounded during processing and detainment when my gender identity was disclosed. Initially placed with other detainees, I was later moved to a poorly maintained holding cell. The unsanitary conditions and lack of access to basic necessities amplified my anxiety and discomfort, leaving an indelible mark on my memory.
Consequences and Costs
The aftermath of my arrest has been both financially and emotionally taxing. Due to COVID-related court delays, my case remained unresolved for nearly three years, limiting my eligibility for certain employment opportunities. The financial burden has been significant, totaling $2,600 in fines and fees, alongside a substantial loss of time—12 months, 5 days, 11 hours, and 32 minutes that could have been devoted to personal and professional goals.
Despite these challenges, I have embraced my responsibilities. I am paying my fines, fulfilling my community service obligations, and have completed court-mandated prevention courses. These actions reflect my commitment to accountability and my determination to learn from this experience.
Lessons Learned
1. Reflection: Law enforcement serves to maintain public safety, but officers are not obligated to show kindness or compassion. It is essential to understand our rights and remain informed to make sound decisions during interactions with police. I learned that in high-stress situations, I respond with politeness, compliance, and nervousness—a reality shaped by my identity as a queer Black man.
2. Accountability: Accepting responsibility for my actions has been a vital part of my journey. I recognize that my poor decisions—from separating from my friends to consuming alcohol and attempting to drive—led to preventable consequences. These mistakes have motivated me to make better choices moving forward.
3. Systemic Insights: My experience highlighted systemic gaps in the processing and detainment of gender-nonconforming and queer individuals. The lack of safe and effective procedures for addressing our unique needs underscores the urgency for reform within the criminal justice system.
Moving Forward
Community service has provided a meaningful avenue for giving back. I aim to serve in ways that align with my professional and personal aspirations, such as storytelling, supporting positive events, and advocating for societal change. Through these efforts, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate community.
This experience has also deepened my resolve to avoid repeating past mistakes. Witnessing the devastating impact of substance abuse on my father’s life—from multiple DUIs to declining health and financial instability—has reinforced my commitment to responsible decision-making. I am grateful for the unwavering support of my family and friends, whose encouragement has been instrumental in my journey toward healing and growth.
Advocacy and Awareness
Sharing my story is not only a step toward personal redemption but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the broader issues surrounding DUIs, systemic inequities, and the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. By reflecting on my experiences, I hope to inspire others to make informed choices, seek help when needed, and advocate for systemic change that uplifts all members of our society.
Through accountability, reflection, and a commitment to growth, I am determined to turn this difficult chapter into a foundation for positive impact and meaningful advocacy.
