Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement
706-389-4129
Athens, GA – The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) is hosting a Justice for Inmates rally on Thursday, November 19, at City Hall starting at 5:30 pm.
Inmates in ACC jail allege that they have been subject to various forms of mistreatment ranging from violence and excessive aggression, to neglect. In the last 30 days, AADM has received multiple complaints from inmates that allege that they were beaten during arrest resulting in serious bodily injuries, are not given necessary medical attention while in custody, and are subject to violent actions from officers in ACC jail. In some cases, when investigations are made into these incidents, the inmates involved say they are not questioned about their experience and little to no disciplinary action is taken to hold the officers accountable.
According to a 2019 audit of the Sheriff’s Office, it was concluded that there is poor employee morale, staffing shortages and inadequate training, a lack of trust in leadership, and inconsistencies in disciplinary actions, among other things. These are major operational issues that are reflected in the alleged gross mistreatment of the inmates in custody. This behavior cannot continue, so we ask that you join us in speaking up and speaking out.
