Fully Mapped: United Against Discrimination Participants
UGA students map out participating downtown businesses
Athens, GA. – In October 2016, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) cofounders launched the United Against Discrimination (UAD) sticker campaign in an effort to encourage Athens business owners to stand in solidarity against discrimination and hatred regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, or immigration status. The goal of AADM’s UAD sticker campaign is to break racial barriers and create a more diverse and inclusive culture in downtown Athens and the surrounding areas.
Building on this work, students in UGA professor Dr. Jerry Shannon’s Community GIS (Geographic Information System) class spent weeks canvassing downtown Athens businesses to both update our list of participating businesses and encourage those not on the list to join the campaign and show their support. The students then plotted the points using OpenStreetMap to create an interactive map showing all participating businesses.
Businesses participating in the UAD sticker campaign have pledged to continuously work towards creating a more diverse and inclusive workspace, have a UAD sticker displayed on the front door or window so patrons and passerby can easily identify participants, and have committed to attending one of AADM’s workplace trainings or annual conferences.
