Community Gathers in Memory of Santonio Coleman, Calls for Justice, Safety, and Support for Transgender Lives

Athens, GA – November 4, 2024 – Join the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, SONG, family, friends, and supporters of Santonio “San” Coleman, a cherished transgender member of the Athens community, for a public gathering and press conference on Tuesday, November 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the intersection of Oak Ridge Avenue and Vine Street.

The event aims to honor Coleman’s life, seek justice, and raise awareness of the challenges and violence faced by transgender people, particularly Black transwomen.

Coleman, 48, was found unresponsive at this location on Saturday morning, October 19, by a passerby. Authorities have reported the death as suspicious and family members are urging a thorough investigation. Though homicide has not yet been confirmed, Coleman’s cousin believes that an attack may have occurred. The case is currently under investigation at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s forensic lab in Decatur.

“Even as we wait for more details, we know the pattern is all too familiar,” said Coleman’s cousin. “Transgender people, especially Black transgender women, face violence, harassment, and a lack of support at shocking rates. Santonio deserves to be remembered and honored, and we are coming together to ensure that happens.”

The Coleman family is also requesting donations to assist with funeral expenses and calls on the community to rally in solidarity and support. To make a donation visit GOFUND me at https://gofund.me/9d931a27

San’s memory will be further honored during this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, an annual observance that mourns transgender individuals lost to anti-transgender violence.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, trans women of color are disproportionately impacted by violence, comprising more than 60% of transgender victims in the U.S. in recent years. In 2023 alone, 90.9% of trans and gender non-conforming victims were people of color, and 69.7% were trans women.

This tragedy unfolds in a larger national and local context where transgender rights continue to face legislative setbacks. In recent years, anti-LGBTQ bills have gained momentum, including efforts by state legislators in Georgia to restrict access to gender-affirming care. Many in Athens and across the country are calling for inclusive policies that respect LGBTQ rights and combat the stigmatization that can fuel such acts of violence.
