4th Annual Athens MLK Day Parade and Music Fest
“Stand with Love, Not Hate”- “Let No Man Pull You Low Enough To Hate Him”-Martin Luther King” 2020 Athens MLK Day Parade and Music Fest theme.
Join the United Group of Artists Music Association and the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement for the 4th Annual Athens MLK Day Parade and Music Fest on Monday, January 20, 2019, starting at 3pm. Organizers, Knowa and Mokah Jasmine Johnson, have a busy weekend ahead. In addition to co-producing the Athens in Harmony (a concert designed to break racial barriers through music and held at the Foundry on January 19th at 7pm), this husband and wife team also organize the 4th Annual Athens MLK Day Parade and Music Fest. “Our goal is to promote unity and justice and to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King.”
Local and surrounding counties including Barrow, Jackson, Madison, and Oconee Counties and various organizations are welcome to participate. Parade begins 3pm in front of the Morton Theater at 195 West Washington Street, Athens, GA 30601.
What to expect:
1:00 pm Set-up (parade participants, vendors, and volunteers check-in near the Morton Theatre)
3:00 Parade Begins (on the corner of Hull and Washington Street)
Parade participants must walk in groups of 5 minimum or more and are encouraged to make signage that represents the theme. Participants may also promote a cause or a positive message.
4:00 pm Honoree Ceremony: Features African American elders and pioneers of Athens, GA
4:30 pm Block Party-Club Crawl Begins:
Little Kings: Family-friendly and Youth Arts For Justice
World Famous: MLK Hip Hop Showcase with Squalle, Kolo, Beard Noise, Queen Wavey and more
Manhattan: Storytime with African American elders
Hull/Washington Streets: Various performers and vendors
Each year the United Group of Artists Music Association gives back to the community by donating a percentage of the proceeds to the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) because it has been a vital force in promoting the philosophies and goals of Dr. Martin Luther King in the Athens-Clarke County community. AADM advocates for equal justice, opportunity, and economic advancement for all persons
