The celebrated concert Athens in Harmony is back for its fourth year to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy and to acknowledge the work that still needs to done. Superb gospel singers, hip-hop artists, singer/songwriters, rockers and R&B singers have been matched across cultural and genre differences to perform duets of popular songs. Two other special super-groups and an audience sing-along round out the show.
The concert, a benefit for the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, is designed to improve race relations and break racial barriers within our community. The AthensAnti-Discrimination Movement works to prevent discrimination in downtown bars and elsewhere and organizes the Martin Luther King parade and other events that mark Dr. King’s many accomplishments.
The impetus for the show dates back to a 2016 rally at City Hall in Athens that the non-profit organized to call for justice after yet another innocent black man — Philando Castile — had been killed by police, and the officer was not held accountable. The protest also mourned the death of four police officers who had been killed in Texas around that time. The concert continues as a call for peace and justice.
Mokah-Jasmine Johnson, the president of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, and Shane Sims, a chaplain with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, will emcee the show.
The show starts at 7 PM. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
Performers include singer/songwriters Claire Campbell, Sarah Zuñiga, Don Chambers, Beto Cacao, and Wilma; gospel singers Clara Ham-Daniel, Kim Arnold, and Reggie Willis; rockers Erica Strout, Eric Carter of Bloodkin and Dan Horowitz of Five Eight; hip hop artists LG, ManGo Smith, and Noc Da Don; blues and soul singers Clarence Cameron and Knowa Johnson; all-around chanteuses Chaniece, Day’Marie, Marty Winkler, Susan Staley, and Chereese Dunn; folk rockers Rob McMaken and Neal Priest; and guest star Bertis Downs. The concert goes international this year with Japanese singer Yuria of Pinky Doodle Poodle, a band currently touring the southeast.
Michael Wegner leads the incredible backing band.
