After months of activism, on Tuesday night, November 1st, the Mayor and Board of Commissioners committed to addressing the problem of discrimination in our community by approving a CDO (Commission Defined Option) that directs the Office of the ACC Manager and the ACC Attorney to explore ways to create a more inclusive and welcoming community through the creation of a government-appointed and operated citizen “human relations” commission to partner with local citizens, organizations, or other mechanisms. This was an overall success for the leading organizers and all Athens citizens.

Mokah Jasmine Johnson states “This has been an exasperating process for everyone involved, but it’s a worthy fight.” And while we may not agree with some of the Commissioner’s decisions, we congratulate them for their work.  We look forward to the development of a strong citizen’s commission, customized to fit Athens’ own character, offering the disenfranchised a seat at the table, and the protection of citizen’s human and civil rights.

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement(AADM) will continue to fight against discrimination through community activism, educational forums, and production of events that stimulate cultural diversity and acceptance.  AADM events already embarked upon include the hugely successful Athens in Harmony, Athens Black Market, and Athens’ first MLK Day Parade schedule for January 16, 2017. AADM looks forward to a continued relationship with Athens Clarke County Police Chief Scott Freeman to support community policing.
