Athens Business Owners Unite Against Discrimination (AADM Sticker Campaign Part. 1 Recap)

On Thursday, October 20th, members of AAD Movement and volunteers congregated at World Famous on Hull Street next to the Historical Wilson’s Barbershop to launch Phase 1 of the Athens Anti-Discrimination sticker campaign. Organizer Mokah-Jasmine Johnson split everyone up into 3 teams, led by AAD Movement Board members Greg Wagstaff, Phelan, and Knowa D. Johnson.  The goal was to cover businesses on Washington, Clayton, and Broad Street.

Canvassers visited approximately 75 local  businesses and more than 30 stickers were posted on downtown business owners doors or windows. Some employees who worked for businesses owned by major corporations stated they needed to get approval from their corporate office before accepting the sticker.

The vast majority of employees, managers, and owners enthusiastically welcomed the opportunity to display the sticker and stand united with the people of Athens against discrimination. Through this experience we had the opportunity to learn more about downtown businesses and network with owners and citizens.

Some people say “stickers alone wont stop people from discriminating”, and it won’t, but we believe it will make consumers and employees more consciously aware that discrimination is not welcomed in our community.

Twice a year canvassers will revisit business owners to update stickers and document the results of this campaign. We thank the people who support the movement for their thoughtful consideration.

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement’s mission is to unite our community and decrease discriminatory behavior in Downtown Athens. Also, to clear up any misconceptions, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is  non-profit organization founded by Mokah-Jasmine Johnson and her husband Knowa D Johnson. Mrs.Johnson is the director and lead organizer, this organization is made up of 7 board members and local citizens who volunteer. And we only partner with local organizations and community leaders to advocate for racial and social justice.
